Edwards Cob Eco BuildingsSustainable Cob DesignWhat is Cob?In a nut shellCob is a structural composite of earth, water, straw, clay and sand, which is hand–sculpted into building while still pliable. It contains no additives or chemicals and is completely environmentally friendly. There are no bricksUnlike rammed earth, there are no bricks. Instead the cob is sculpted directly by hand into the shape you want. This means there is the scope for curves and uniquely shaped structures. Edwards Eco Building use cob to create the most aesthetic creations possible – they’re not just builders but artists as well. What’s new about cob?Not a lot really. It’s been used for centuries and probably millennia all over the world. Today, over half of us live in houses made of unbaked earth. There’s mud huts in Africa, lavish adobe haciendas in Latin America, rammed earth mansions in France, earth brick palaces in China or old cottages in Norfolk and Suffolk. What is new about cob though, is Edwards Eco Building. They create buildings for you using trialed and tested methods but on top of that, they throw in a contemporary design element. What’s the difference between cob and clay lump?Cob and clay lump use the same ingredients. Cob is just mixed up in a different way. Clay lump is mixed in a mixer, which uses more water. It’s then made into bricks, which are dried before using. In contrast, cob is mixed by hand and foot and sculpted directly onto your wall. This gives it much more versatility and some would say, makes it much more sexy !What does it feel like?Once built your cob house will feel warm and cosy in the winter and need little or no heating. In the summer it will feel cool and airy. Earthen floors catch a large amount of the suns rays and feel warm and sensuous to walk on in bare feet. We design our cob houses to make best use of passive solar rays by placing many large windows on the south side of the building and only small ones on the north. Cob houses feel amazing to be in partly due to the even temperature and partly due to the natural benefits of living in a breathable natural structure free from chemicals. In this current climate of ever increasing fuel bills, expensive gas from Russia and tax on fuel going up by the minute, a cob house will give you lasting security against what ever the governments will throw at us next.More questions?See our FAQs or email us. |
