We will be running both 4 day complete cob courses on 'how to buld your own cob house' and 1 day introduction to cob courses on 'how to build an earthen pizza oven', throughout the year. Camping is available by the lake a short walk from the site and other accommodation options are available nearby. 4 DAY COMPLETE COB COURSES - LEARN TO BUILD YOUR OWN COB HOUSEPerhaps you want to buy your own plot of land and build your own beautiful, sustainable and affordbale earthen home? Or perhaps you're thinking of a smaller project like a garden studio or you live in an old clay-lump or cob house and you want to learn how to maintain it? Or maybe you just fancy learning a new skill in a breathtaking setting, and making new friends? Whatever your interest in earth building, you'll find this intenisve and comprehensive course invaluable. The objective of the course is you leave being able to build your own earthen building after just 4 days of intensive, hands-on training.What the course covers: - Siting and design of your cob structure, including planning applications, building regulation control and passive solar design. - All aspects of cob building from the foundations to the roof. - A brief history of cob and various other forms of earth building around the world. - A full detailed demonstration and examination of how to source your raw materials for building cob i.e. clay, sand and straw. - A comprehensive look at the various methods of mixing and preparing cob, including specific mixes for different building techniques. The course will be mainly practical with each participant given individual attention to enable them to feel fully confident and comfortable, building and sculpting with the cob medium. Each day will contain one to two hours of theory, plenty of practical demonstrations and hands on experience. There will be ample time to ask questions and discuss your own potential projects and ideas. Your taste buds are in for a treat too as we'll also show you how to cook mouthwatering bread or pizzas in your oven too. Celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall have made pizza ovens more popular than ever- but ready made ones can set you back thousands of pounds. We'll show you how fun and easy it is to make an authentic and aesthetic oven yourself for just a few quid!! Various other aspects of cob and earth building will be looked at on the course and a little theory will also be included - so it's also a good introduction to earth building. There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions about your own projects. The day also serves as an excellent introduction to the 4 day cob course. TEACHER INSET DAYSThe one day course on how to build a pizza oven has also been tailored to support teachers and other education providers.
