Edwards Cob Eco Buildings

Cob courses, education, houses and cob commissions

What can Edwards Cob & Eco Building do for you?

  • We can design, plan and construct you a cob house, cob garden studio, cob extension, office, bench, spiral staircase, earthen oven, or anything else you can imagine. There are few limits with cob. We also work with schools, building Outdoor Classrooms, cob ovens, cob benches and sculptures.
  • We can teach you how to build with cob yourself. We run Courses on how to build your own house or studio from cob and we also run cob workshops on how to build your own pizza oven from cob. Most of our cob building courses take place here at our cob centre in Norfolk on the edge of Filby Broad but we also travel around the world running courses in different countries.
  • We also carry out renovations on old cob, wattle & daub, clay-lump and adobe buildings - repairing and rebuilding, and carrying out lime and clay plastering and rendering. Plus we offer consultancy on earth building to surveyors, architects and builders.

What is Cob?

Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, straw and water. For thousands of years it has been used as a strong, enduring, eco-friendly, replenishable and versatile building material. Over half the world's population live in cob houses and thousands are found across the UK. Old cob and clay-lump houses are scattered throughout East Anglia where we are based, especially Norfolk and Suffolk and are still standing strong. Edwards Eco Building is continuing this traditional and beautiful method of construction with a contemporary twist - see our projects at our Gallery page. As they say, it's the old ideas that are the best! Cob building makes complete sense on every level - environmentally, aesthetically, practically and economically. Our aim is to empower as many people as possible to build their own cob house or cob building and if they don't fancy getting their hands dirty themselves - we'll do it for them. And to ensure cob really takes off in the future we're dedicated to working with young people in schools across the UK and further afield.

Why choose Cob?

  • It is load-bearing and extremely strong
  • It is cheap to build - the earth from the grounds costs you nothing!
  • It can be sculpted into almost any shape
  • It looks fantastic!
  • It is extremely environmentally friendly
  • I has almost zero embodied energy
  • Cob houses are refreshingly cool in the summer
  • Cob houses are economical and need very little heating in the winter, thus reducing heating bills dramatically
